Optimization has a legitimate use. A system can be adjusted to reduce waste, improve performance, or better serve its purpose. Applied without limit to a human being, however, the framework changes the relationship to the self.
The optimized self is never complete enough to inhabit. There is always another routine, metric, symptom, belief, body part, income target, or communication pattern to correct. Attention becomes organized around deficiency. Even care is converted into maintenance for future output.
This creates a paradox. The person may become highly self-aware while losing contact with life beyond self-monitoring. She evaluates the conversation while having it, measures the rest while taking it, and observes her own healing for evidence of progress. The monitoring apparatus consumes the attention the practice was supposed to restore.
For women already subject to scrutiny, optimization can become an internal continuation of the external gaze. The body must be controlled, the voice calibrated, the emotion acceptable, the home ordered, the work exceptional, and the response to injury educational. The demand is not mastery. It is permanent audit.
Self-governance requires evaluation, but not continuous prosecution. A stable internal authority can identify a problem, choose an intervention, and allow the intervention time to work without turning every day into a referendum on worth.
There are seasons for construction and seasons for inhabitation. There are areas that need repair and areas that are already sufficient. The capacity to stop correcting what is not broken is part of discernment.
The self is not only the object of governance. It is also the place from which governance occurs.
